Duke Gardens to Remain Closed for Fall Semester

In keeping with Duke University’s campus-wide health and safety measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Duke Gardens will remain closed through the end of 2020.

For more information, visit the Sarah P. Duke Gardens website.

Attendance Restrictions Announced for Fall Sports

Due to the impact of COVID-19, Duke University will begin its fall sport program seasons without spectators at home events.

“To be sure, our venues will not be the same without our passionate, energetic fan base,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White. “Given the unique and challenging circumstances, this determination was reached with the health and safety of our fans, student-athletes, coaches and staff at the forefront. As this evolving process continues, it is imperative to be both adaptable and compliant in anticipation of hosting fans in the near future.”

Contests played on Duke’s campus will include essential game management personnel and broadcast media. Traditional parking lots used by fans on gameday will be closed.

Fans who have purchased season and single-game tickets for the upcoming football season or have seating and suite contracts in Blue Devil Tower will receive email correspondence regarding options.

Despite the attendance constraints for football games, Duke fans have an opportunity to support the team at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium with a “fan cutout” of an individual(s) or pet(s). Several different packages are available and include stadium location options, weekly prize drawings and the ability to have the cutout autographed by head coach David Cutcliffe. Images placed in the seats will help replicate the gameday atmosphere in the stadium as well as provide an enhanced visual presence for the television audience. Proceeds from sales will go directly to Duke Athletics to support our student-athletes during these unprecedented times. For more information, visit GoDuke.com/DukeCutout.

Information regarding the virtual fan experience for football games at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium will be available at a later date.

The Blue Devil football team opens the home portion of the 2020 schedule against Boston College on Saturday, September 19. Amended schedules for Duke’s men’s cross country, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball teams have yet to be released.

Duke Gardens Will Remain Closed

Buildings to Move to Controlled Access on Monday (previously Friday)

In an effort to better secure facilities and protect property, all buildings on Duke’s main campus in Durham will go into a controlled-access status that will require a DukeID card for entry.

This change will take effect at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 16, 2020. Faculty, staff and students will continue to have access to most of the same buildings they did beforehand, but they will be required to swipe their DukeCard ID or use the Mobile DukeCard to gain access.

Community buildings such as the Perkins Library, the Brodhead Center, and the Bryan Center will also be accessible with a DukeCard ID or Mobile DukeCard. In addition, some departments may include stricter access requirements for certain buildings to address unique needs.

Duke faculty, staff and students should carry their cards or mobile credentials with them at all times.

For questions regarding building access, help with enabling your Mobile DukeCard, or replacing a lost DukeID Card, please contact the DukeCard Office at dukecard.duke.edu or 919-684-5800.   The DukeCard Office is normally open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. M-F and will also be available by phone during this weekend from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. to assist anyone needing help with building access.

Update from The Rubenstein Arts Center

Dear friends of the Ruby,

In order to minimize health and safety risks from COVID-19 to our patrons, the larger community, and Duke students, faculty, and staff, Duke University has adopted new policies on spring semester classes, residential life, travel, events, and campus visitors. (Find this update and the latest information on Duke’s Coronavirus response website.)

In keeping with the university’s directives, we are cancelling public events at the Rubenstein Arts Center through April 20. Starting today through March 22, building visiting hours will be 10–5, Monday through Friday and closing the building to visitors through May 7, 2020 [this is an update as of 3/13/2020].  We will provide additional updates, including modifications to upcoming MFA EDA thesis exhibitions, soon.

The arts are best experienced in community with one another, and I know this pause on our regular arts programming will be a challenging experience, but your safety is our top priority.

If you have questions about the Rubenstein Arts Center, please reach us at artscenter@duke.edu. If you are a student, I encourage you to read this additional guidance.

As this situation develops we will keep you updated, and I hope you join us later in the spring when programming resumes. Until then, I wish good health for you and your loved ones.

Thank you for being part of the Duke arts community,

Scott Lindroth
Vice Provost for the Arts

Announcement from Duke Performances

Dear Friends,

Due to precautionary measures related to COVID-19, Duke University has temporarily suspended on-campus classes and is postponing all events with an expected attendance of more than 50 people taking place both on- and off-campus between now and April 20.

Sadly, we must cancel all Duke Performances presentations, both on- and off-campus, up until April 20 May 7, 2020 [UPDATED 3/13/2020]. We wish these changes weren’t necessary, but under the circumstances an aggressive course of action is justified to protect public and community health.

In particular, we are postponing our presentations of American Ballet Theatre scheduled Thursday, March 26 through Sunday, March 29. We plan to reschedule this engagement to a future date and will be in touch once our plans are confirmed.

We will also do our best to present in the future the other artists impacted by these cancellations.

The Duke University Box Office will issue refunds to patrons holding tickets for presentations from now through April 20. Tickets purchased with a credit card will be refunded to the card of purchase. If card of purchase is expired, refund will be issued via check. Tickets purchased via check or cash payment will receive a check reimbursement sent to the address on record. All refunds are expected to be completed within 8 weeks. We are doing everything we can to expedite refunds and appreciate your patience.

For our ABT presentations, most affected ticket buyers who purchased using a credit card should see a credit appear on the charge card account used for purchase within the next 2-3 weeks. This automatic refund includes those that purchased tickets online or by phone with DPAC or Ticketmaster, or in person using a credit card at The Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Ticket Center at DPAC. If you purchased with cash, please return to the Ticket Center to obtain a refund. For more information, please email DPAC at customerservice@dpacnc.com.

For our co-presentation of Zakir Hussain with the Carolina Theatre of Durham on Thursday, April 16, patrons who purchased tickets with a credit card will have those purchases refunded automatically. Patrons who purchased tickets with cash will be able to get a refund by returning their tickets to the Carolina Theatre of Durham Box Office (10AM-6PM Mon-Fri). The Duke University Box Office will issue refunds to all Duke student patrons for Zakir Hussain.

We thank you for your support of Duke Performances and hope you will attend our presentations later in the spring should conditions change.

Until then we wish good health for you and your loved ones as we endure this unprecedented challenge.

With best wishes,

Scott Lindroth
